The Night Before Juniper's Birthday (When I Went into Labor with Her)

Tuesday, December 09, 2008

I have everything ready for Juniper's first birthday party tomorrow night. I picked up some cloth flags sewn by someone locally and zig-zagged them in the dining room, will pick up her strawberry lemonade torte from Jaciva's tomorrow morning, and bought Juniper two special gifts from Landon and I, though I know she will get a few more from her grandparents.

She's a beautiful, special little girl, and I'm excited to be celebrating her first year, though it's with mixed emotions when I think about the little newborn that came into our lives last December and how quickly she's grown. For the first three days after she was born, I did nothing but sit and stare at her. She's a big girl now, yet there are still glimpses of her babyhood that I see from time to time.

Last year on December 9th, Landon, Sam, and I watched Gorillas in the Mist, and it was about halfway during the movie that I realized that I was getting contractions every 18 minutes or so. During the night, they never stopped and got closer together with each passing hour. As I slept, I would feel them in their intensity, and they seemed like waves to me, like I was floating on a raft in the ocean. I dreamed about giving birth. After a night of sleep, I got up, took a shower, and things started progressing quickly after that. By 3:21PM that afternoon, Juniper was born, weighing 9 lbs. 7 oz. and 21 1/2 inches long.

Tomorrow I will get up and make waffles for Sam and Juni in celebration of her birthday, then once Sam's in preschool, her and I will go out for coffee, pick up her cake, and once she's had her afternoon nap, it won't be long before we'll be celebrating with her grandparents. Jaciva's is making her a little mini-torte to match the larger one. For my first birthday, my Mom bought me a pink cake that was a flowing dress with a doll figurine stuck on the top. Jaciva's still makes these, but they only use Barbie dolls, so I didn't get it for her, though I really wanted her to have the same cake I had for my first birthday. Here's a picture of my first birthday cake:

And of me opening presents on my first birthday.

And eating my first birthday cake.

Stay tuned for Juniper's birthday pictures tomorrow!
