Goals for the Rainy Season

Thursday, November 20, 2008
Rainy days like today help me to appreciate all the indoor things that make up our home that get ignored during the busy summer months spent outside. Today was a great day, too, because I finally reached a point where I'm officially caught up from falling very behind when all the members of my family came down with either an illness or a physical ailment--all at once. It's a great feeling to finally be caught up, and I have the lists I made each day this week to thank for reaching that goal. But back to the rain--it's the rain that keeps us indoors, sparking inspiration in me to create order, rhythm, and beauty in this home of ours that I've grown so fond of over the past couple of years.

So what better day than today, with all the wind and rain, to invite Sam's best friend over for an afternoon playdate (he happily awaits his friend's arrival in the picture below). Oh, and yes, that is laundry neatly folded on the right--I actually caught up on the laundry today. Of course, when everyone got into their pajamas tonight, they created a new pile, which means I'm already a load behind again--but at least I was caught up for a few hours this afternoon, and that's what counts, right?

Another benefit to rainy days, which lead into evenings that grow dark before Landon even gets home from work, is movie nights. A couple of nights ago when Sam was still feeling unwell, Landon rented E.T., made popcorn, and he and Sam had a special night watching it together. I was afraid it would be too old for him, but it captured his attention and didn't scare him in the least.

These don't have a lot to do with rainy days, but they are too darling not to post. Remember these orange boots I bought Juniper early this fall? Well, adorable, yes. Practical, no. I had a hell of a time getting her chubby little feet into them, and if she twisted her ankle this way or that, they fell off easily. She never actually wore them all fall, because I was afraid we'd lose one in public, so I returned them for these adorable and practical red shoes, which I love. She's already scuffed them a little, which are part of the charm. I can't handle how cute her chubby legs look in the leg warmers she received as a gift from Moments in Color when she was born. Thank-you, Andrea! We love those leg-warmers every bit as much as you do!

I'm lifting my glass of Merlot to rainy days this fall and winter. I look forward to using these rainy months as an opportunity to delve into the art of creating, beautifying, and pursuing a domestic life that is balanced, orderly, and rhythmic. I don't know if I'll start doing laundry on Mondays and ironing on Fridays, but for now, my daily list is a start--a way to set daily goals, establish a certain focus to the day, and assume a sense of accomplishment by the time my head hits the pillow.
