No more blackberry starters. All the weeds are gone, although some of their root systems remain behind. Nothing buffs up the biceps like a good old weeding workout. How can one small weed resist the weight of this still overweight, post-partum body? I don't know, but I landed on my ass (sorry, Mom, I meant to say bottom) more times than I can count, leaving behind roots, removing only the green.

Until we can amend the soil professionally, I sometimes put coffee grinds along the fence line in hopes the rock hard clay might soften only slightly for the few plants trying to make it there, poor things. I sometimes throw stale bread back there for the birds.

Nothing lifts the spirits and eases the sore muscles of the weed-pulling Mom like a bowl of salted edamame pods and a glass of Spanish red wine while watching one of the best movies I've seen in a long time, There Will Be Blood. Juniper slept soundly throughout the nearly three hours I spent watching it with Landon. Because it's sometimes fun to pretend we can stay up as late as we want with no consequences, we watched it until midnight. If you haven't yet seen this movie (based on Upton Sinclair's novel, Oil!), I highly recommend it. Daniel Day-Lewis, who won an Oscar for his role as oil profiteer Daniel Plainview, takes acting to a whole new level in this film--a stunning and moving performance that I'm still mulling over.

Great job with your yard Karli! I'm always impressed with your gardening skills. I love that you get out during your day to do it. That's the one thing that never crosses my mind although I always want it done.

I can't wait to see what your yard looks like this summer.
