February Book-Club

Tuesday, February 26, 2008
Last night was book-club, which I look forward to every month. For February, we read "The Whistling Season" by Ivan Doig. I haven't read any of his other novels or non-fiction work, but after reading this one, I think I've discovered another master writer! Each sentence is carefully crafted & he skillfully weaves this story together. Having said that, I didn't enjoy the story all that much. It was a slow story, set in early 20th century Montana. That time period definitely has it's share of interesting stories, so I'm not quite sure why this one isn't a little more exciting. Despite the dull plot, I kept reading, because Doig's writing is so captivating. I think a few of us agreed last night at book-club that the book seemed devoid of emotion in many places. Perhaps in the time Doig takes to thoughtfully construct each sentence, he loses some of the emotion that a more free writing style can bring to the story. I'm curious to read some of Doig's other novels, and I've heard his earlier work is excellent. My copy of "The Whistling Season" has already been mooched and is on its way to Texas. I'm always happy to finish a book and feel excited to pick up a new one. We're reading "The Big House," a non-fiction book by George Howe Colt for next month. Can't wait to start it! Meanwhile, I must update my Shelfari account (oh, for some free time!) and add my friends so we can exchange reviews!

Hey Karli! I just wanted to say thanks for the catalog choice link. I get SO MANY catalogs that I never order from, and some I don't even look at! I just went and cancelled all of them. Such a great website! I love that I don't have to have my mailbox so cluttered with them, too. I've been wanting to call each of them for some time, but haven't gotten around to it, so this made it SO much easier!
