Becoming a Pumping Mom

Saturday, February 23, 2008
If she can do it (be a pumping mom, a working mom, AND look this good), then maybe I can, too! Yes, it's true. I'm now currently taking on the task of learning how to pump. Like breastfeeding, it isn't as easy as it sounds. Plus, I really dislike (okay, hate) pumping! But, if it means I can leave the house for two hours at some point, then maybe it's worth it. Plus, Landon would like a chance at feeding little Juniper. So with some old-fashioned determination, I'm hoping I can make this work, which means increasing production & let-down. Sounds scary already. For starters, I'm setting a personal goal of trying this for a week and who knows, I just might be a pumping mom, too.

Getting a good pump makes all the difference in the world! I had a single pump with Will that was some cheap one I picked up at Target. I got the Medela Pump in Style with Hunter and the Pump in Style Advanced (which is comprable to a hospital pump) and it's wonderful! You can do it Karli and those breaks with Landon feeding the baby are going to be wonderful! I used to pump a bottle during the week so Joel could take a weekend middle of the night feeding so I could sleep through the night one night a week.

It's not so bad once you get the hang of it. I pumped for three months straight while Caden and Avery were in the NICU, and then a little longer while they learned to latch on. It definitely isn't as enjoyable as actually nursing your snuggly little baby, but it IS nice to be able to have a little break here and there!

But the pump totally makes all the difference in the world. The nicer the pump, the easier it is.

All I can say about all of this Karli, is that I use to do it with the old fashioned hand pumps and I hated it but both Shelly and Kristi had a much nicer one that was so advanced from what I ever had. You does give you a little bit of wiggle room to have a breather for yourself.
