Choosing a Name

Tuesday, November 13, 2007
During week 10 of my pregnancy, I heard a nature name on a podcast that I really loved, and Landon liked it, too. When I was 17 weeks pregnant, Landon saw a street name in downtown San Francisco that he loved for the middle name, and although I wasn't too keen on it at first, I really like it now. Anyway, since then, we haven't found any names that have topped this original name we picked out. It's an unusual name, and hasn't EVER made it into the top 1000 names in the US, unlike Samuel, which is given to one in every 25 boys born in the US. We love the name, but Landon recently came across an old-fashioned, classic girl's name which we both like, so now we're wondering if we should go classic or original. Since the first name has stuck throughout the whole pregnancy, we'll probably go with that, but at this point we have two names, and we might just wait to make a decision until she is here. Part of me likes the name to be settled before the baby is born, but this time around, it's been a struggle, and I go back and forth constantly on the name. I hope once she's here, the name will feel right...and maybe there is a reason why we haven't found another name to top this one--it could be that this name is meant to be hers.

We totally had a more original name picked out for Olivia and decided to go with Olivia later in my pregnancy. Sometimes, we look at her and her name doesn't feel right, but I think it's because we called her the first name for so long. I would wait until you meet her if I was you...

How about you tell me the choices and I'll tell you my favorite??? Ha ha! I'm only teasing. I know you want to keep it a secret until her big arrival. Can't wait to see what you've chosen! :)

I agree with Betsy--I think there's a lot to be said for meeting her and even spending a couple of hours getting to know her and her personality, if you want since meaning can be important too. I think when you see her face you will immediately know which belongs to her. I can't wait to meet her!

And I just realized that we talked about getting together this week and I've barely been on email--we've been so busy! Next week before Thanksgiving? I'm so sorry!

We waited until Misaki was born to choose between the two names that we liked. When she came out and they handed her to me, Chikara asked me what I thought and I knew that her name should be Misaki and not the other, more American name that we had chosen. It totally fits with her and her personality. The funny thing is that I can't even remember the other name now!
