First Prenatal Appointment

Monday, May 07, 2007
I had my first prenatal appointment today, and we heard the heartbeat! It was so exciting! Based on my calculations, I'm either 9 or 11 weeks pregnant, and because they were able to detect the heartbeat (which is rare at 9 weeks) via Doppler, and the way my uterus is measuring, the midwives think I'm 11 weeks, which puts me further along than I thought. We'll know for sure in two weeks when we have the ultrascreen done, at which point I'll post pictures! It will be nice to know for sure how far along I am as well as see the baby on the screen. The ultrascreen is a non-invasive test that screens for Down's and Trisomy 18. The false positive rate is much lower than other screens like the AFP. There is an over 90% accuracy rate. The sonographer measures the nuchal translucency and bloodwork is drawn. The NT measurement together with the bloodwork are then sent off, and it takes about a week to get the results back. Today's appointment ran about an hour and a half, and Samuel was such a good boy throughout. He watched them listen for the baby and was interested in the needles when they drew blood. He kept saying, "Mommy's owie almost getting better." Lots to look forward to in the next few weeks. I'll be moving out of the 1st trimester & have first pictures of our new baby-to-be!

That would be so great if you were 11 weeks! I'm glad to hear your appointment went well. Looking forward to those pictures of your little one!

Girl, if you're 11 weeks, then we really are close. I'm 11 weeks and 5 days today!
