The Sellwood Bridge (1925)

Thursday, October 12, 2006

The planning phase for the rebuilding or redesign of the Sellwood Bridge began in early June of this year. It will continue until May, 2008, at which time a decision & approval will have been reached as to the future of the bridge. I would like to see it rebuilt as a four-lane bridge with ample pedestrian & bicycle access. As is now, there is only a four-foot wide concrete sidewalk that accomodates lamp posts, cyclists, & pedestrians. Currently, there is barely enough room for one-way pedestrian & cycling traffic, as the lamp posts leave less than 3'. Unless you're willing to risk all, most people walk their bikes. Since this bridge is less than 1/2 mile from our house, we are looking forward to being involved in the planning phase & are excited for improvements that are on their way to being made. These changes will create a safe commute for us by bike, foot, or car to the Sellwood neighborhood & east side.
